Know which slide system you have
RV slide-outs are moved by a few different mechanisms. Electric rack and pinion systems use a motor turning gears that mesh with toothed rails. Cable systems pull the room in and out with a set of cables and pulleys. Hydraulic systems use a pump and rams, often sharing fluid with the levelling jacks.
Your owner's manual will tell you which type you have, and it matters. A grinding rack system usually points to lubrication or alignment, a cable system that moves crooked often has a stretched or slipped cable, and a hydraulic slide that creeps or stalls may be low on fluid or have a leaking fitting.
Why slide-outs stick and grind
The most common cause is simple, dry or dirty tracks. Grit, leaves and road dust build up in the rails and gear teeth, and the mechanism has to fight through it. In Alberta, gravel roads and spring dust make this worse, and a season of freeze and thaw can leave moisture and corrosion in the works.
Low battery voltage is the next big one. Slide motors draw a lot of current, and a weak or partly discharged battery can make the room move slowly, stall partway, or bind on one side. Always test with the battery fully charged or the RV plugged into shore power before assuming the mechanism itself is broken.
Alignment problems are more serious. If one side of the room moves faster than the other, or the slide sits crooked in the opening, the mechanism is out of sync. Forcing it in or out at that point can bend gear racks, tear seals, or damage the room structure itself.
Why slide-outs leak
Every slide room relies on rubber seals, usually a bulb seal that compresses when the room is closed and wiper seals that sweep the walls as the room moves. Sun, heat and cold dry the rubber out over time, and Alberta's strong UV and big temperature swings are hard on it. Once a seal cracks, flattens or tears, water has a path inside.
Leaks also show up when the slide no longer closes squarely. A room that is slightly out of adjustment will not compress the seal evenly, leaving a gap at one corner. Water that gets in tends to run along the slide floor, so the first signs are often a soft spot, a stain, or a musty smell near the slide rather than an obvious drip.
What you can do yourself, and when to stop
There is real maintenance an owner can do. Keep the tracks and gear racks clean and lightly lubricated with a dry-type slide lubricant so they do not collect dust. Treat the rubber seals with a seal conditioner a few times a season. Park reasonably level before operating the slide, keep batteries charged, and clear snow, ice and debris off the slide roof before bringing the room in.
Stop and get help when the problem involves force or water. Grinding that continues after cleaning and lubrication, a room that moves crooked or stalls partway, hydraulic fluid on the ground, or any sign of moisture inside the wall or floor are jobs for a shop. Slide mechanisms are strong enough to damage the room structure, and water that has already entered a wall rarely dries out on its own.

Common questions
What should I use to lubricate my slide-out?
Use a dry-type slide-out lubricant on the gear racks and tracks, and a rubber seal conditioner on the seals. Avoid greasy sprays that attract dust and grit, and never put petroleum products on the rubber seals, since they can break the rubber down over time.
My slide stopped partway out. Can I close it manually?
Most systems have a manual override, often a crank point or a way to disengage the motor, described in your owner's manual. Use it gently to get the room closed and secured for travel, then have the system inspected rather than relying on the override repeatedly.
Should I store my RV with the slides in or out?
In. A closed slide keeps the seals compressed and protected, sheds snow and rain, and takes the load off the mechanism. That matters especially through an Alberta winter, when snow load and repeated freezing are hard on an extended room and its awning topper.
