Why wind hits RVs harder than most owners expect
An RV is a big flat box with a soft roof membrane, thin sidewalls and a lot of edges held down with fasteners and sealant. Wind does not have to blow the unit over to cause a problem. It only has to find a lifting point. An extended awning is the obvious one, but roof edges, vent lids, and the front cap trim are all places where air can get underneath and start peeling.
Alberta adds two extra pressures. Chinook winds arrive fast and warm, often after a cold stretch, so materials that were stiff and contracted get flexed hard. And on the prairie there is very little to slow the wind down, so a rig parked in an open storage lot east of Calgary can take gusts a sheltered driveway would never see.
The other thing to understand is that wind damage is usually cumulative. One blow lifts a strip of edge trim a couple of millimetres. The next one gets further underneath. By the time anything is visible from the ground, water has often already had a season to work its way in.
The awning: check it before you use it again
Start with the fabric. Look for new tears, pinholes, stretched or wavy sections, and any place where the fabric has pulled at the roller tube or the front rail. Hold a section up to the light if you can. Fabric that stretched in a gust often will not roll up tight again, which leaves it flapping and makes the next wind event worse.
Then look at the arms and hardware. Bent arms, a twisted front rail, loose or sheared rivets, and mounting brackets that have pulled away from the sidewall are all common after a gust. Open and close the awning slowly and watch how it tracks. Binding, grinding, or one side leading the other means something is out of alignment and should not be forced.
Finally, check where the awning rail meets the wall. That rail is screwed through the sidewall and sealed. A hard pull on the awning can loosen those screws or crack the sealant bead above the rail, and that puts water into the wall rather than onto the ground. Run a finger along the top of the rail and look for gaps, lifted sealant or dark streaking below the screw line.
Roof edges, seams and seals
If you can safely get on the roof, or reach it from a ladder, walk the perimeter first. The edges are where wind does its work. Look at the corner mouldings, the front and rear cap seams, and the metal trim strips along each side. You want the sealant to be continuous and bonded. Cracks, lifted lips, chalky crumbling material or a spot where you can see the fastener head are all reasons to reseal.
Next check everything that pokes through the roof: vent lids, the air conditioner shroud, the fridge vent, antennas and skylights. Vent lids are the most common casualty. A lid left open even a little can be caught and snapped, or the hinge can crack while the lid stays roughly in place, which is easy to miss from the ground. Press gently on the sealant around each penetration and see if it moves as one piece with the roof.
Also look at the membrane itself for new stretch marks, bubbles or a spot where it has separated from the decking underneath. Then go inside and check the ceiling corners, the edges around roof vents and the tops of the slide openings for soft spots, staining or a musty smell. Damp that shows up inside is the strongest evidence you have that something on the outside has opened up.
What to do next, and when to bring it in
Take photos before you touch anything, especially if you plan to make an insurance claim. Wide shots showing the whole unit, then close ups of each damaged area, plus a note of the date and where the RV was parked. If a temporary cover or tape is needed to keep water out until the shop can look at it, photograph the damage first and mention the temporary fix later.
Small jobs are reasonable to handle yourself. Cleaning and resealing a short run of lap sealant, replacing a cracked vent lid, or tightening loose trim screws are all within reach for a handy owner, as long as you use sealant that is compatible with your roof material. Mixing the wrong product onto an existing bead can make the repair fail faster than doing nothing.
Bring it to a shop when the awning arms or brackets are bent, when the awning rail or any trim has pulled away from the sidewall, when the roof membrane is torn or lifting, or when you find any softness inside. Those are structural and water intrusion issues, and guessing at them is expensive. Common questions
How much wind is too much to leave my awning out?
Check your awning manufacturer's guidance, since ratings vary by model. As a practical rule, if the fabric is flapping or the arms are moving, roll it in. Never leave an awning extended when the RV is unattended or overnight, which is when most Alberta wind damage happens.
My RV looks fine after a windstorm. Do I still need to check the roof?
Yes. Most wind damage to roof edges and seals is not visible from the ground. Lifted trim, a cracked sealant bead or a hinged vent lid can look normal from the driveway and still let water into the roof structure. A perimeter check after any big blow is worth the ten minutes.
Will my insurance cover wind damage to an RV?
